Bransby Williams (Bransby William Pharez, 1870-1961) is little remembered now. He was an actor known as the “Hamlet of the Halls” for his dramatic recitations in the Music Halls. His impersonations and sketches were justly renowned. The greatest part of his extensive discography (for the Gramophone Company, Edison Bell and Columbia) was, however, as a Dickensian. His Scrooge of 1928 was the first Dickens sound film. Ha later performed the role for an early BBC TV production on December 27th 1950. He also appears in a couple of British Pathé shorts.
