Virgilio Ranzato (7 May 1883, Venice - 20 April 1937, Como) played violin at the conservatory in Venice, and was for a time leader of the orchestra of La Scala, Milan. He was an accomplished soloist, and chamber musician in his own right, and also worked as a conductor. He later turned mainly to composition, writing an opera, Campane di guerra, performed at Milan in 1933, as well as a number of operettas.
